Working with Eating Disorders

Acupuncture encourages a sense of connection with the body, which can be a valuable addition to a recovery treatment plan. There are addiction protocols and points shown to calm down the sympathetic nervous system, allowing the body to relax into a more centered and healing state. Many find that they are more calm after a session. A recent study also showed improvement in quality of life and decreased perfectionism for those who add acupuncture to their Eating Disorder (ED) treatment plan.

This medicine sees the body as a whole, and any type of "dis-ease" is a reflection of imbalance. Many patients report that they begin becoming more aware of their patterns and bodily sensations, which can be a helpful piece of breaking any disassociating cycle. The approach is not in "treating the eating disorder" but in treating each individual and considering the eating disorder as part of the presentation.

While acupuncture does include some physical contact, many find it to be a much less triggering touch than other types of bodywork. At Grounded Acupuncture, there is experience with the population of eating disorder patients and professionals, HAES aligned values, and a dedication to working with each patient to create a therapeutic environment.

For those currently in treatment, we encourage open communication between Grounded Acupuncture and the patient's therapist, registered dietitian, and any other members of the treatment team (pending patient approval and proper release forms signed). For those further along in their recovery, having an acupuncturist with an understanding of an eating disorder history can help further healing progression.
